Daichiji was founded as a buddhist temple of Tendai sect about 800 years ago. However, it went to ruin at Warring States Period. In 1500 Somin Gyokuho priest revived Daichiji as a Zen temple for Kitano lord's family.
At the Tokugawa Period, Daichiji was permitted to use "Crest of the hollyhock", which was the symbol of Tokugawa family. Even now, the crest of the hollyhock is used for the envoy gate and buddhist altar fittings etc.
The priest is the 19th generation now.

The origin of the Buddhism is a great antiquity. However, it is still new though our life have changed and the science and technology have advanced.
Even today, man tries to escape from the dread of the grave which he cannot escape. He doesn't think by himself, and act by the desire. He doesn't spend time for himself. However, can you say that such a life is a good life?
Buddha will answer, "NO". Because he will die even if he has forgotten it. After all, he will be worry about it. He might think like..."What is my death?" or "Why am I alive?"
The teaching of Buddhism is one way to solve these question.
